Expert Answers about Chevrolet Trailer Axles

  • Replacement 3,500 lb Brake Kits for a 2011 Freedom Express Trailer
  • Hey Michael, thanks for reaching out! It does sound like your 2011 Freedom Express should come with 3,500 lb axles so the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes # AKEBRK-35 or the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35 will work in this case. I do recommend double checking your axle capacity by looking at the tag in the middle of your axles prior to purchasing. If you have a different weight rating on your axles please let me know. Attached are some installation videos for your reference.

  • How to Add Lippert Shocks to 2020 Gulf Stream 199DD With Underslung Axle
  • The Lippert Shock Kit # LC281255 is the only option for shocks on a single axle trailer but it is still possible to install these on your 2020 Gulf Stream 199DD. You can use the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 to flip your axle so it is in the overslung configuration. This will also raise your trailer by the diameter of your axle plus the height of the leaf spring stack so you would also gain additional clearance. If you would rather not raise the trailer,...

  • Are There 7K Trailer Axles The Same Width as a Ford F-250?
  • We are only going to have a 94" # 8327864 and 95" # 8327834 width for a 7,000lb axle beam. If you are wanting a solid axle beam like this the same width as your F-250 it would have to be special ordered from a local dealer. Otherwise we do offer the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # TASR7KS01 which will allow you to customize the width of the axle based on the mounts. Each hub face will sit 6-1/4" from the frame rail it is mounted to. This system has its own suspension setup built...

  • Choosing Between SumoSprings or Shocks for 2020 Keystone Hideout
  • I would choose the SumoSprings over Lippert shocks for your 2020 Keystone Hideout. The SumoSprings have a simple installation and won't require drilling in your frame. They also have a progressive spring rate so they become more rigid the more weight you add to your trailer. The SumoSprings work just like shock absorbers and also reduce body roll, sway, and compensate for off-center loads like slide-outs. You will need a quantity of two, one for each axle. You can choose from the following...

  • Can The Timbren Axle-Less Attach to 2-1/2" Square Tube Frame and What 10" Wheel and Tire Will Fit?
  • Yes, the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # A35RS545 can be mounted to your 2-1/2" by 2-1/2" square tubing. Depending on your trailers structure you may need to add an additional crossmember to prevent the frame from twisting but this is covered in the installation instructions which I have included near the bottom of the page. For 10" tires and wheels we have the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H480 or Galvanized Wheel # AM3H490. Do understand these are...

  • Is There Inconsistency With Electric Brake Wiring Gauge
  • That's a good question Barry, and electric brakes like # 23-468-469 do use 16 gauge wiring for the pigtails. But we do recommend using 10 gauge to connect to the brakes simply because of how far the wiring generally has to be run on trailers. I can't speak for why manufacturers use 16 gauge on the pigtails, unfortunately, but sticking with 10 or 12 gauge to ensure less voltage drop per length.

  • Torque Spec for Axle Nut and Lug Nuts
  • There is no specific torque setting for the axle nut with the # AKIHUB-440-2-G-EZ-1K. Check out the installation video below starting at the 13 minute mark. The hub is overtightened at first to make sure everything is seated. Then he backs off the castle nut until it is loose. After that, tighten it back until you get a little bit of pressure and make sure there is no play. Then you will check your holes for your cotter pin. For the lug nuts you're going to have 8-14" wheels and this has...

  • Troubleshooting Voltage Not Reaching the Axles
  • Thanks for all the details! Unless your trailer's 7-way connector is filthy or covered in corrosion, based on what you've described it sounds like you are experiencing a voltage drop due to the distance of the brake wire from the 7-way connector. I would check the inside of the 7-way connector just to rule it out. Make sure all of the connections are solid and there's no corrosion that could interfere with the electrical signal being sent to your brakes. Most likely since you've installed...

  • Should Equalizer Hanger Be Installed First for Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit
  • Thanks for reaching out about the Correct Track Trailer Alignment and Lift Kit # RR23QX, Mike! The instructions only mention adjusting the front axle before the rear axle, but I agree with you - the middle hanger that holds the equalizer will need to be installed first so that everything else can be lined up correctly.

  • What Happens if "W" Shape From Trailer Equalizers Is Too Spread Out
  • Thanks for reaching out, Scott! The "W" shape formed by your equalizer, shackles, and leaf springs actually looks to be just fine. Since your 25-1/4" Long 5-Leaf Double-Eye Springs # e34SR are the same and you have the same distance between your hangers I don't really see any issues here. I've attached a photo of this same location from our installation of the same leaf spring for you to reference. If that "W" shape were to be spread out too much then yes, you would have trouble. Basically...

  • How Does Prodigy P2 Brake Controller Install on 2022 Ford F-53 Motorhome Chassis
  • Hey Jim, so there is a brake controller plug in harness on your 2022 Ford F-53 motorhome that you can use to install the P2 part # 90885 that you have but we don't have a plug-in style adapter for it. So what you'll have to do is cut off the harness on the motorhome as well as the connector on the brake controller harness and hardwire the two together.

  • Which Trailer Brake Controller and Wiring is Recommended For a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado?
  • That's a great question Bob. I do see you were looking at the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which is one of my favorite brake controllers thanks to the easy to read LCD adjustable screen. To help with the installation I have linked an installation video done on a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado in our facility near the bottom of the page. In this video they install the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 which uses the same connector. They also use the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. If you already...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Compatible Hitch for a 2023 Subaru Ascent
  • Looks like you're interested in a weight distribution system for your 2023 Subaru Ascent and possibly a hitch compatible with one. I took a look at your owner's manual (page 431) and if you have the factory hitch it isn't rated for one so the only option you have for it is the Curt True Course Advanced Bluetooth Trailer Sway Control - 1 to 4 Axles item # C94VV. The Curt True Course item # C94VV is an electric sway control system that connects to your Subaru's 7-Way and is controlled by...
